Pneumatically driven finger movement: a novel passive functional MR imaging technique for presurgical motor and sensory mapping.

چکیده
Two of the most common reasons for failure to obtain adequate preoperative functional data are inadequate task performance and excessive head motion. With an MR imaging-compatible pneumatically driven manipulandum, passive motor tasks elicited reproducible contralateral activation in the M1 and S1 in 10 healthy controls and 6 patients. The SMA was localized in all healthy controls and in 5 of 6 patients. Head motion was reduced in passive tasks compared with active tasks.

Sensory motor cortex: correlation of presurgical mapping with functional MR imaging and invasive cortical mapping.
PURPOSE To describe a clinically useful application of functional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging--presurgical mapping of the sensory motor cortex--and to validate the results with established physiologic techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS Functional MR mapping of the sensory motor cortex was performed in two women, aged 24 and 38 years. Both had intractable, simple partial motor seizures due ...
متن کاملMapping of the central sulcus with functional MR: active versus passive activation tasks.
PURPOSE Our purpose was to assess the pattern of functional MR activation obtained with a passive sensory versus an active sensorimotor hand stimulus paradigm. METHODS Eight functional MR runs, four with an active sensorimotor (sponge-squeezing) task and four with a passive sensory (palm-finger brushing) reception, were acquired for each of 10 healthy volunteers. Activation maps were generate...
متن کاملTask-free presurgical mapping using functional magnetic resonance imaging intrinsic activity.
OBJECT Low-frequency components of the spontaneous functional MR imaging signal provide information about the intrinsic functional and anatomical organization of the brain. The ability to use such methods in individual patients may provide a powerful tool for presurgical planning. The authors explore the feasibility of presurgical motor function mapping in which a task-free paradigm is used. ...
متن کاملPresurgical functional MR imaging of language and motor functions: validation with intraoperative electrocortical mapping.
PURPOSE To prospectively determine the sensitivity and specificity of functional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging for mapping language and motor functions in patients with a focal mass adjacent to eloquent cortex, by using intraoperative electrocortical mapping (ECM) as the reference standard. MATERIALS AND METHODS The ethics committee approved the study, and patients gave written informed con...
متن کاملPresurgical Language Mapping in Patients With Intractable Epilepsy: A Review Study
Introduction: about 20% to 30% of patients with epilepsy are diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy and one third of these are candidates for epilepsy surgery. Surgical resection of the epileptogenic tissue is a well-established method for treating patients with intractable focal epilepsy. Determining language laterality and locality is an important part of a comprehensive epilepsy program befo...
